Jade left and they quietly cleared the table. Morgan loaded the dishwasher as Margie packed up leftovers.

“I’m sorry to hear about your mother, Morgan,” Luke said as he carried in a stack of dishes.

“Thank you.” Morgan made sure not to look up from the plate she was rinsing. No need to get into this with Luke. “Margie – you’re not going to be able to eat all of these leftovers by yourself, are you?”

“Oh, would you kids like to take some of these home?” she replied.

“I mean…if you’re offering!” Morgan said with a smile.

“You don’t have to take them just to make me feel better,” said Margie. “I know it wasn’t my best meal.”

“Margie – it was delicious! Amanda was just in a sour mood. She’ll get over it.”

“Excellent work with that rambling story, by the way,” said Luke. “I’m going to need a more in-depth history of all that.”

“Thanks.” Morgan laughed. “Maybe some other time.”

Margie frowned. “I don’t know if Amanda is going to get over it. I don’t want her to think that I’m trying to replace her mom – in any way.”

“Oh come on – she’s just being moody. You can’t let her get to you.”

“I also can’t marry her father and damage their relationship.”

“Margie! Come on – it’s not going to damage their relationship. You can’t break up with Chief! You’re an island power couple!”

She smiled. “I love him and I’ll do what’s best for him.”

Morgan frowned. Why did that sound so ominous? How could Margie even think of breaking it off with Chief? Just because Amanda was being a little snotty?

“Luke – you saw how great they are together. Talk her out of this.”

He put his hands up. “I’m not one to support weddings.”

“Thanks for the help,” she said, glaring at him.

Margie packed up the leftovers into two bags. “Don’t worry about me Morgan. And thank you both so much for helping to clean up.”

Morgan accepted both of the bags, handing one off to Luke. “No, thank you for having us. Don’t do anything crazy, okay?”

“Yes,” said Luke, “don’t do anything that Morgan would do.”

Margie smiled. “Have a good night. It was very nice seeing you again Luke.”

“It was lovely, thank you for having me.”
